Now in its sixth year, SproutSpoken has been steadily growing a spoken word scene in Newquay and further afield in Cornwall, providing a platform for local talent, supporting those who want to share their words and bringing some of the best names on the national circuit to the duchy.

This event is kindly funded by Restormel Arts, a charity formed in 1992 which aims to promote professional and amateur arts activity and to engage the local community as both audience and participants.

FEATURE PERFORMERS :

SproutSpoken is delighted to present three fantastic South West based feature performers during the night…

JONAH CORREN is a songwriter-poet hailing from West Dorset. His work has been published online and in print, most recently by Violet Indigo Blue, etc, and in the After Sylvia anthology from Nine Arches Press. He is also a UniSlam champion (2019), Exeter City Slam Champion (2023) and an alumnus of BBC New Creatives (2019/20), Beatfreeks Artivists in Training (2020) and The Apples & Snakes Writing Room (2021). Jonah’s debut folk-rock EP, Dreaming and Petty Crime, was released in December 2020, and his spoken word and music single Borderlines, a collaboration with rapper and multi-instrumentalist Rowan Sawday (better known by his stage persona Dizraeli), was released in December 2021. He is now living in Plymouth, and organises & hosts the local monthly poetry evening ‘POETRY@thePPL’.

ELLA WALSWORTH-BELL is an NHS speech therapist who has lived in Falmouth since arriving there with her parents by boat as a young child. She writes poems inspired by the sea and co-created Morvoren, a poetry anthology about women’s sea swimming.

JASON BUTLER is a wordsmith, described as a “a rocket of sheer spoken word energy” hailing from Cornwall whose “linguistic wizardry” covers a plethora of topics – like a muck spreader full of words. He follows wherever the muse takes him, from the emotional and heartfelt to the occasional rant through to stand up silliness. Also, if asked nicely he can merrily weave an improvised verse from thin air. He was a finalist in the national Outspoken poetry awards, has a few slam titles under his belt and has hosted and headlined poetry stages across the South West. His first collection of poetry “Miscellany of One” is due to be published later this year by Slate Publications.
