Back in the UK after almost ten years spent in France, saxophonist Sam Coombes's full return to the British jazz scene has been sealed with the recent release of Outlines on the 33Jazz label. His third album under his own name, Outlines is made up very largely of original compositions by the saxophonist. Coombes' more recent and UK-based musical work, in addition to quartet playing, has involved a progression towards both trio and solo saxophone work, and larger ensemble work on the horizon.
Graduate of the Guildhall Jazz Course. Has performed with own trio plus many other leading musicians: Eddie Henderson, Bobby Wellins, Arnie Somogyi’s Ambulance, Jean Toussaint. Three albums under own name the last of which is Seventh Sense (Basho, 2007).
19 year old double bassist, Andrew Robb, is finishing his first year on the jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Initially studying classical music he participated in National Children's Orchestra of Scotland and continues play in the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland where he is currently leading the bass section.
began playing the drums aged 12 whilst at school in Derby. After being introduced to jazz in his local youth big band (EMYJO), he quickly developed an affinity for the music and for the drums. In 2006 he moved down to London having been offered a place on the prestigious undergraduate programme at the Royal Academy of Music.
“Coombes often demonstrates a real daringness in his solos and especially on the alto where sparks really fly.” Jazzman
